Increase On-line Traffic: Why You Shouldn’t Sell On Twitter, and What You Should Be Doing Instead!

By Stephen On December 30, 2008 Under Increase On-line Traffic

I didn’t really get Twitter when I was first introduced to it. Today I like it, not simply because it is a way to get valuable traffic, but because it’s a way of making valuable relationships. Indeed traffic is really all about relationships anyway.

If you go to my page on twitter http://twitter.com/stephen_bray and look at the tweets I’ve posted recently you’ll see that they aren’t all about Internet marketing, or even attempting to ’sell’ anything at all.

You see Twitter is a ‘micro blog’, and the way I see it, since it’s my blog I’ll write what I want on it. Of course I try not to offend, even if I do tweet about my life ‘as it is’ :-)

Once you treat Twitter as a micro blog, and use a range of media, I use my computer and cell-phone to let people know what I’m doing, Twitter becomes an essential habit in your lifestyle.

I got an e-mail from Alex Jeffreys, my Internet marketing coach, this morning telling me that he no longer answers his e-mail because of the amount of SPAM he’s receiving. I can reach him on Twitter instantly!

Some people overcomplicate Twitter, installing all manner of Twitter plug-ins and programs on their computers. There’s no need to do this. I built a following of over 800 people on Twitter in ten days simply by thinking ‘Google guidelines for websites‘ when posting tweets to Twitter. Quite simply I attempt to make amusing or informative Tweets that people will respond to.

Like any website or blog page, the headline, the first words of a tweet if you’re thinking about Twitter, should capture your reader’s imagination.

If you have a standard blog, or any website with an RSS feed, you can get your posts sent automatically to Twitter by signing up for an account at Twitterfeed.com. A link is posted automatically back to your website in your tweet when you do this.

There is more to Twitter than this, of course, but I’ll save some tips for another day. Today the weather’s fine and I’m hoping to engage in my passion for landscape photography. You’ll be able to follow my progress with this throughout the day at twitter.com/stephen_bray.

Do What Twitter Can’t: Cash In On Your Twitter Stream
While Twitter’s pending monetization strategies are still unknown and we continue to make educated guesses, you can start cashing in on your Twitter stream.

Twitter- I need an intervention, please
I use to love it it I really did but now Twitter is hard work even with Tweetdeck. This post came out of a chat with Alexia on Weds night in Dublin where we both almost said the same thing at the same time.

Integrating Twitter into Your Blog
NETTuts has recently put out an article relating to integrating Twitter on your website. Since blogs are a type of website, I figured now would be a good time to go over some WordPress plugins that help integrate Twitter into your blog.

How Should President Obama Use Twitter?
The Obama White House has a new website design and a first blog, a continuing weekly YouTube channel and an updated Facebook page. What will happen on Twitter?

John,

I’ve sent you a private e-mail with more information on this topic, however:

OpenID is an open, decentralized user identification standard, allowing users to log onto many services with the same digital identity.

An OpenID is in the form of a URL, and is unique in that the user is authenticated by their ‘OpenID provider’ (that is, the entity hosting their OpenID URL). The OpenID protocol does not rely on a central authority to authenticate a user’s identity. Since neither the OpenID protocol nor web sites requiring identification may mandate a specific type of authentication, non-standard forms of authentication can be used, such as smart cards, biometrics, or ordinary passwords.

OpenID authentication is used and provided by several large websites. Organizations like AOL, BBC, Google, IBM, Microsoft, MySpace, Orange, VeriSign, Yandex, Ustream and Yahoo! act as providers.

I hope this helps,

Derrick,

Are you kidding? I’m delighted you chose my blog as an example. I am always happy to help out in any ways I can.

I grew my Twitter following from 28 to currently 823 followers in around ten days, more people are following me daily.

But if you look on my twitter page: http://twitter.com/stephen_bray you’ll see that I’m only following 516 people. In fact I propose to follow some more soon, because now I am going to use Twitter how Alex uses it, which is to see watch what other people in the Industry are doing.

Twitter is very exciting, but as you’re probably discovering it’s far more than simply a numbers game.

Warm wishes for 2009

Stephen
