For example Jason Potash today alerted me to his latest blog post about tunnel vision.

Essentially is saying rather than diversify and attempt to be like Wallmart find a niche that works and sell the hell out of it. The example he gives is of a guy who just sells spiral bound maps.

I intend to focus on photography . . . but not just any photography.

Alex Jeffreys: The Newbies Nightmare!

Have you ever wondered why it is that 95%
of marketers fail on-line?

Perhaps you even think that you’re failing
to succeed when you deserve to be making
money?

Well you’re not alone, and you’re probably
right.

You see every day thousands of people
are attempting to make a ‘crust’ on-line
only to be disappointed at all the time,
effort and money they are spending to get
nowhere.

Alex Jeffreys call this ‘The Newbies
Nightmare’ and it’s the subject of a
complimentary report that he released
on June 21st.

In it Alex spells out may of the reasons
people fail to make it on-line.

As Alex says in ‘The Newbies Nightmare’
making money on-line is ’simple but it’s
not easy’.

Alex certainly knows about making money

But Alex also knows how to treat people
right. Citing a page of testimonials
from ‘happy students’ Alex certainly seems
to be the answer to ‘Newbie’ marketer’s
dreams.

Alex explains that he thought that he
had ‘fixed’ the problems that new Internet
marketers experience in his previous book
‘The Gurus’ Dream’.

But he admits that ‘The Gurus’ Dream’
didn’t go far enough.

Indeed he says that ‘The Gurus’ Dream’
rapidly became ‘The Newbies’ Nightmare’.

How?

Alex explains all.

One of Alex secrets is that although
he likes people paying him money he never
sets out to take it.

His second secret is that he knows that
to be successful you either need time,
or money.

If you know how to organise others then
you may trade money for your time, but
if you’re just setting out then you most
likely need to use your time efficiently.

This means planning, and follow through.

By far the most important thing you
can do is focus on what’s profitable,
rather than on jumping from one new idea
to another.

The third secret is knowing your income
destination. In fact all goals and
aspirations are destinations, but since
Alex is into business he writes mainly
about income targets.

Once you know your target you can then
plan how you’re going to get yourself
there.

No destination, no route, no plan, no
success. Simple really innit??

The Fourth Secret is Implementation.
When Alex buys a product he applies
what it teaches. Indeed Alex is known
for purchasing ‘high end’ products so
that’s a pretty good incentive to use
them.

Although there’s tons of valid
information in free courses and e-books
all that most people do is vicariously
enjoy the authors’ successes without
taking huge action.

This is a mistake.

Of course you can take action and still
fail.

This can be due to information overload,
or simply that the product is incomplete.

The fact is though that marketing and
business are largely about problem
solving and so when you’re interested
in one way of making money, for example
using CPA, then it’s best to keep
researching and practicing, until you’ve
cracked the code.

As Alex reveals, once you start to make
money all the things you thought you
needed to know personally are outsourced
to ‘experts’.  All you need to know is
enough to keep all your staff on the
same page.

The Fifth Secret is very simple. When you
give of yourself freely a buying
opportunity will open up.

Alex is fond of quoting his mentor ‘Rich
Schefren’ of ‘Strategic Profits’ who says:
‘Marketing makes selling superfluous’.

Alex says: "Giving is better than
receiving because giving opens up the
receiving process’.

There’s nothing metaphysical about
Alex’s assertion. He is just demonstrating
the old adage that people buy from people
with whom they’re in a relationship.

The relationship comes first.

Alex is a dominant type A personality, (which means he’s a high achiever), highly focussed. He enjoys both privacy in his family life, and also being a showman for his students and followers.

This is both good, and also not so good. Once you realise that  Alex’s concern is for you to succeed on line, rather than be exactly like him, it becomes all good.

Each of us is different and the lifestyles of a teenager,  a thirty something, and a retired professional are different ~ all have different aspirations.

Internet marketers usually portray themselves as one of three types of character.

a) Those like Rich Schefren, Jay Abraham, Yanik Silver and Andrew Fox who project a ‘film star’ like image. They seem to lead extraordinary lives, drive the most prestigious brands of car, own yachts, horses, castles etc.

b) The Frank Kerns and Michael Cheneys of the field, who come over as ‘regular’ folk who lead everyone elses’ lifestyle, but with more comfort, freedom, and especially the freedom to be relaxed and at ease with themselves.

c) Under the radar marketers such as Chris McNeeny, Alex Goad, and Saj P who seem to know every black and grey hat trick imaginable yet profit from eschewing them in favour of a cannie business sense, and effective research and SEO.

The fact is, however, that when you study success you find that all teach pretty much the same stuff, regardless of the persona from which they impart their teaching.

Alex is very competent as projecting himself. He’s on his way to becoming in the first category above, but that doesn’t mean you have to fall into that category to profit from the knowledge he shares in his Coaching Program.

I think he did a superb job of providing a group of people of mixed knowledge and ability the fundamentals of running an on-line business. That’s no mean achievement.

Anyway, for anyone who is not part of the Alex Jeffreys coaching class, you may have arrived here from a search engine because you want to find out about the man himself, so I will give you a quick run down.

Last week saw the end of Alex Jeffreys “official” coaching course although when I listened to the recorded program it appears he will be providing even more value sometime in the future. So what has been the outcome?

The thing is the way I would prefer to make this venture work is to give  a limited number of people access to something valuable, and to which they can contribute and profit substantially. This isn’t some dumb e-book, or give-away product but and extremely valuable resource that others will be eager to purchase.

By joining me in this Joint Venture not only can people increase their own credibility and brand image they can also receive help to build their businesses in a number of ways that I don’t want to specify here.

Now the thing is my wife thinks I’ve finally gone off my rocker. She always suspected as much and now I’m hard pressed to prevent her calling for the boys in white coats.

“It’s easier to sell dollar bills for fifty cents than to give them away”, she says. Moreover there’s quite a lot of experimental data that suggests that when you give someone something valuable they tend to think it’s worthless.

Certainly when I practiced as a psychotherapist people who paid my full fee tended to arrive on time, act on suggestions, took initiatives and frequently recommended me.

Others, who had financial difficulties, so they claimed, were prone to arriving up to twenty-five minutes late, sometimes cancelled their appointments at the very last minute, tended to lack initiative except when it came to spending money elsewhere on unscheduled treats such as holidays financed with credit.

It was also the case that those same people were the ones who thought that going to see a therapist would miraculously make their problems vanish without them having to take any action.

Economists view money as no more than an exchange of tokens that enables life to flow with less effort than, for example, if you had to trade a cow to obtain an item of furniture, or exchange your wristwatch for a tank of petrol.

But psychologists know that money stirs up people in unexpected ways. Some people suffer with a Scrooge like meanness and hoard their funds. These people can never get enough money. Others cannot keep money even when they have stacks of it like Win Win Win Viv Nicholson who won the pools twice and lost every penny she won. Her life story was even made into a successful West End musical that ran for over 2 years from 1998 - 2000 and starred Barbara Dickson.

There’s some evidence that people who give money to good causes tend to be happier than those who spend their wealth on themselves.

Elizabeth Dunn, a psychologist at the University of British Columbia surveyed a sample of more than 600, or so, Americans of both genders. Whilst people spent at least ten times as much on themselves as on others analysis showed that making donations significantly raised peoples’ happiness level, whereas personal spending had little, or no, long term effect.

Kathleen Vohs from the department of marketing at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, found that words connected to money affect people’s performance levels.

By splitting a group into two samples and asking one group to analyse documents with money related words in them, and the other to read documents about other subjects it was possible to determine that people reading money words will work longer and harder before asking for help.

Maybe, to some extent, this goes some way to explaining how, and why, the Internet marketing crowd get pulled into those long sales letters about earning huge wads of cash? Man they’re drugs. The dollar signs and hundred dollar bills just make some people salivate. Reading the sales letter gives them a fix, and pressing the ‘But It Now’ button is the equivillent of ‘mainlining’.

In an article written by Mark Buchanan in New Scientist, (18th March, 2009), he quotes Vohs thus: “Money seems to have symbolic power as a social resource,” says Vohs. “It enables people to manipulate the social system to give them what they want, regardless of whether they are liked.” Put bluntly, it looks as if money is acting as a surrogate friend. Could that explain why some people focus on extrinsic aspirations at the expense of real social relationships?”

In the same article Buchanan quotes other psychologists who assert that there is such a thing as ‘money addiction’, which is apparently as powerful as addiction to nicotine, and more dangerous drugs.

Unfortunately like so many addictions money doesn’t necessarily bring you happiness, although being poor and hungry isn’t a good idea either.

Studies show that women especially delight in giving money away. Their brains light up in similar ways to when they eat chocolate. When forced to spend money on taxes however no such correlation can be found.

This may seem to have come a long way from the original topic of this post but has it? Clearly the whole notion of helping others make money is complex. If  making money is an addiction that leads to misery then should it even be permissible?

On the other hand if giving can make you happy shouldn’t I set an example and give this opportunity freely?

Anyway, what I’m proposing isn’t a direct cash hand out, and I’m not suggesting that some work wont be needed if people are to get the most from what I have in mind.

Hell it’s the weekend. I’ll shelve the decision for a few days. It’s not urgent anyway.

Many of those who comment here are people who took part in Alex Jeffreys’ first Coaching Program, which ended in January.

Of those students a few are highly successful, but many are not.

Before you think this is going to be another one of those blogs exhorting people to take action, or suggesting that failure on-line is somehow your fault be reassured it isn’t.

You see I think I may have discovered the reason why some are succeeding whilst most continue to fail even after Alex’s coaching.

The reason emerged as I looked at the various blog styles, the posts made, and the comments offered.

You see Alex is a highly charismatic character. He likes to live life in the fast lane. He works hard, plays hard, and puts himself forward.

Do you remember how he sent out that video letting us know that he had been nominated for a Shorty Business Award on Twitter? Pure showmanship!

The fact is though that not all of us are showmen, or show women. But that doesn’t mean we’re failures.

Lets look at this in more detail.

Rich Schefren and Jay Abraham in the Maven Matrix Manifesto clearly outline the benefits of showmanship. So do Dr. Joe Vitalie, Jonathan Gunson, Maria Andros and may others.

Quite simply when you’re perceived to be the expert in your field you don’t need to search for joint ventures, products to promote, adwords, pay per click, off-line advertising, or any of the things that are the bread and butter of most Internet promotion. The reason is that people will beat a path to your door. Indeed you will have to turn most J.V. offers away.

But being on show comes at a price. Not everyone wants to live in the limelight, to be under public scrutiny, to have to endure comments made about the veracity of their claims. Indeed not everyone wants to be a star.

If you don’t want to be a star that’s OK and you can still be successful on-line. But you need a different kind of training!

You see you can never become a star even if you model what the successful Internet marketing stars do unless you know deep down, at your core, which is a feeling just under your diaphragm below your stomach, that you’re really a star who has always been waiting to happen.

If you don’t have that conviction, them really you need to follow a different path to success.

Here are some other tests to determine if you’re a star, or what I like to term a ‘back-room executive’.

Would you prefer to drive a Ferrari, or a family saloon? Do you want to change your life, or lead the same life in better surroundings without financial worries?  Is your wristwatch about showing you status, or telling the time? Are you looking for life in the fast lane, or a better education for your kids?

If you want the Ferrari, the new lifestyle, the Audmars Piguet wristwatch, the tux in the casino, then most likely you’re a star in the making. You know what you need to do ~ get your teeth fixed and then make videos; create a professional polished web site; develop your own products to giveaway; give interviews; endorse other peoples’ products; write books; give away free reports; cosset other stars; and hire Glenn Dietzel :~)

But if you’re interested in your family, your wristwatch is used to tell the time, you like your life but would enjoy a larger house without financial worries, and you would like your kids to get a good education without having to leave home then probably you’re a back room executive.

These aren’t trivial distinctions. Take the wrong training and you will fail.

Can you imagine a star spending their days supervising the development of a host of niche web sites? Do stars look forward to spending even half an hour doing keyword research to find hot niches that will make them money on auto-pilot if they do it right?

Of course not. They’re researching diamonds, and Porches, purchasing yachts, and writing stories about teachers who thought them failures because they didn’t apply themselves to lessons or care about the environment.

But the back room executive loves the chase, and meat of marketing on-line. Tracking down a bevy of long-tail keywords, setting up a set of valves and funnels to make money on auto-pilot excites them beyond measure. Indeed they even get satisfaction from knowing that they might buy the entire street yet their neighbours think of them as modest people possessed of community values.

If deep down you’re a back room executive you need to know the intricacies, tips, tricks, turns, white hat, grey hat, black hat, secrets of the Internet that enable reclusive people to make thousands on-line.

Personally I don’t believe that grey, or black hat techniques are necesary for on-line success, but as an Internet marketing professional you should know every twist and turn of earning money on-line.

You see I am one of the 2000 or so people who purchased Frank Kern’s Mass Control 2.

And the very first DVD addresses something I attempted to get at in this post.

The problem with studying with successful marketers like Alex Jeffreys, Alex Goad, or Brian Johnson is that you’re not Alex Jeffreys, Alex Goad, or Brian Johnson.

All might urge you to carry out certain tasks and courses of action, but unless you have their mindset you’re unlikely to do so. Indeed it’s almost guaranteed that you won’t.

The result is that you will fail as an Internet marketer, probably buy many more products urging you to do things incongruent with who you are, or what you want, and slowly go crazy.

That’s my experience anyway.

Of course there will always be those lucky few who hit upon a method that dovetails precisely with who they are, or who they want to be. When this happens usually the creator of the system takes the credit, rather than the person who was able to use it.

Mass Control, and especially the Core Influence video that starts the series, bi-passes all of that.

Did you know that although Frank had some on-line successes that most of us would have killed to achieve it wasn’t until around 18 months ago that he was truly happy?

You see until then he was running his business according to the rules others had taught him. Only when he was able to access his own core values and be the person he really really is inside was he able to acquire health, wealth and happiness.

And indeed Frank did become wealthier, and with more ease.

Of course I must be careful what I post here because I don’t want to infringe Frank’s copyright, or indeed steal his materials in any way. But I will however go naked on these pages and reveal just how Mass Control impacts my business.

Until recently I was in the third group. Whilst my off-line businesses thrived on-line I was failing big time, yet I thought I knew all about Internet marketing. I tried dozens of different systems for making money on-line, and read every e-book and studied every video I could find.

But nothing was working.

In fact I tried far too many systems, spent thousands of dollars unnecessarily, and gave up my quest for on-line success at least three times.

But the lure of Internet riches is as addictive as ‘Crack Cocaine’, and I saw many young people far younger and less experienced than me were making fortunes via the Internet.

I tried SiteBuildIt, WordPress Blogs, Posting at Forums, and a host of Web 2.0 Systems but without any financial return.

Until recently my best commission came from the single sale of a Forex Product whose owner later got closed down by the authorities.

The reason I continually failed, I have discovered, was that I had no plan.

Late in 2008 I enrolled in two coaching programs for on-line marketers. One was with Alex Jeffreys, and mainly about building a list and the second is called Google Conquest, which is both an on-line marketer’s education, a community, and a suite of software to help you get things done.

Ever so slowly I have started to move from a course of failure on-line to one of Internet marketing success.

The best part was that this change was occurring despite power-failures and Internet outages, due to the sub-tropical winter storms that go with a Mediterranean climate.

Today the sun shines and I pen this message to you in its early morning light. I’ve not yet had breakfast and the rest of the family are sleeping.

Despite an uncertain economy, inflation, and a world beset by such problems as wars, famine, volatile fuel prices, global warming, and unstoppable viruses I am optimistic.

If you think that you cannot become financially independent if not today, then this year, then you won’t become free from the drudgery and servitude that comes with a nine to five job.

Here I chart my experiences as a on-line marketer, and also offer tips for newbies.
