Unfortunately gaining followers hasn’t been without its problems. If the aim is to build relationships with people, in other words to be of some service, companionship, or friendship gaining lots of followers quickly can be painful. When my in-box started to be flooded with new followers I felt very bad that I was unable to respond to each of them personally.
I’ve already written about this in my post about TweetLater. Today I’ve gone a step further and installed a program on my desktop called TweetDeck. I love it. If you’re unfamiliar with TweetDeck and want to understand what it is, and what it does here’s a short video I made that explains it all.

Increase on-line traffic: Create Powerful Backlinks

There are a number of ways of obtaining backlinks, and some are to be discouraged as I’ve discussed elsewhere. Commenting on other people’s blog posts is a powerful way to draw attention to your website, and you.
Some people imagine that making a comment will lead to their website automatically being advanced in Search Engine rankings. This isn’t necessarily so, You see many, if not most, blogs have as a default setting something called the ‘no follow tag’. This tells search engine robots when they trawl the site that the link in the comment points off the site, and shouldn’t be followed.
It’s not a bad thing to comment upon websites that have the no follow tag enabled because if they’re getting traffic and, your comment is sensible, them possibly a reader will click on your link to learn more about you. The point is though don’t expect the search engine to follow the link!
Some blogs do allow search engines to track those who comment and these can easily be identified using a piece of free software called ‘Real Link Finder.’
The video above shows how Real Link Finder works and what it can do. Real Link Finder is quite easy to download and install but be aware that you can’t unlock it by submitting a free e-mail address such as one from Yahoo, Google, or MSN. Submit such an address and your unlock code won’t arrive. Submit a regular e-mail address from your own domain and you should have no trouble.

Increase On-line Traffic: If you’re thinking about using Twitter to build relationships you need to read this post.
Alex Jeffreys’ student Derrick Siu has made a video about how to follow more people on Twitter. Derrick has discovered that when you more people more people will follow you.
Twitter won’t let you follow more than 2000 people unless you have a lot of followers, I don’t know but I suspect you would need at least 2000 followers before you’re allowed to follow any more. I currently have over 800 followers and I’m following around 600 people. This is a good position to be in because I have plenty of room to decide whom to follow.
The other day Mike Filsaime posted a blog in which he wrote: “Follow me and I will follow you.” Some thought this a pretty pointless idea pointing out that Twitter is more than a numbers game. I, somewhat, agree although numbers are important too.
The real secret of Twitter is that it enables you to meet more people with your interests, or in your industry. Before following lots of people as Derrick suggests I would make a list of all the people in your particular field who may be on Twitter, then I would follow them.
Be warned, they aren’t obliged to follow you if you do this, but simply reading their tweets will give you valuable information about your field. Once you’re sure that you’re following the right people then I would selectively add people from the people whom they are following, this is my plan anyway I’ve scheduled some time for this task during the next two weeks.
If you wish you can use a service called ‘Tweet later‘ to automatically follow anyone who is following you. This is fine if you’re still in the low numbers as far as following people. When you reach 2000 however Twitter will start bouncing your automatic requests, and if these persist then you may find your account suspended. Just remember that Twitter is a microcosm of the Internet. Use it as I suggested in this post, and you can’t go far wrong.

Increase on-line traffic: Should You Attempt This Yourself?
The incomparable Seth Godin today published a brief article about the relationship between expertise and passion.
In it he says:
“I think if the work is important, it should be done with passion and skill and flair. But the work of balancing the books, or running Google adwords or making sure that customers are treated well at the ski school often has nothing to do with the product or service itself. It’s more important that you be passionate about what you do all day than it is to be passionate about the product that is being sold. Give me someone with domain expertise and the passion to do great work any time. Belief in the mission matters (a lot!), but it doesn’t replace skill.”
The question then for a small business owner seeking to promote their product, or service, via a website is should they attempt to master website building and maintenance themselves, or should they hire someone else to do it for them?
Internet Mrketing coach Alex Jeffreys is in no doubt that technical matters should be outsourced to industry experts, unless of course you’re an expert yourself. In his book a business owner’s role is simply to decide in what direction s/he wants the business to go, and then get others to do the sweat-work for them. It’s worked for other business leaders too.
It worked for Richard Branson, and before him John Paul Getty, Nelson Rockefeller, and Andrew Carnegie. No general fights with rifle and bayonet but their skill in directing specialists in firepower and logistics can sever thousand of causalities, including civilians and also the foe who gets soundly defeated.
Alex Jeffreys learned this lesson from Internet marketing mega star Rich Schefren. Schefren was a businessman long before he entered the Internet arena.
His ‘Manifesto‘ is a milestone document as far as helping Internet marketers organize their lives. Seth Godin would undoubtedly agree with much of the Manifesto. Many have started their entrepreneurial careers working for Seth Godin, for example Photo JoJo’s founder Amit Gupta who worked with Seth Godin to set up ‘Change This‘.
Godin prizes brains and flair and if you’re possessed of these then working for Seth Godin could kick-start your success. The question for me now is should I continue to tweak this website, a little here, a little there to increase my on-line traffic, or should I hire an expert?

Increase On-line Traffic: Why You Shouldn’t Sell On Twitter, and What You Should Be Doing Instead!
I didn’t really get Twitter when I was first introduced to it. Today I like it, not simply because it is a way to get valuable traffic, but because it’s a way of making valuable relationships. Indeed traffic is really all about relationships anyway.
If you go to my page on twitter http://twitter.com/stephen_bray and look at the tweets I’ve posted recently you’ll see that they aren’t all about Internet marketing, or even attempting to ’sell’ anything at all.
You see Twitter is a ‘micro blog’, and the way I see it, since it’s my blog I’ll write what I want on it. Of course I try not to offend, even if I do tweet about my life ‘as it is’
Once you treat Twitter as a micro blog, and use a range of media, I use my computer and cell-phone to let people know what I’m doing, Twitter becomes an essential habit in your lifestyle.
I got an e-mail from Alex Jeffreys, my Internet marketing coach, this morning telling me that he no longer answers his e-mail because of the amount of SPAM he’s receiving. I can reach him on Twitter instantly!
Some people overcomplicate Twitter, installing all manner of Twitter plug-ins and programs on their computers. There’s no need to do this. I built a following of over 800 people on Twitter in ten days simply by thinking ‘Google guidelines for websites‘ when posting tweets to Twitter. Quite simply I attempt to make amusing or informative Tweets that people will respond to.
Like any website or blog page, the headline, the first words of a tweet if you’re thinking about Twitter, should capture your reader’s imagination.
If you have a standard blog, or any website with an RSS feed, you can get your posts sent automatically to Twitter by signing up for an account at Twitterfeed.com. A link is posted automatically back to your website in your tweet when you do this.

Increase On-line Traffic: Why Some People Don’t Get It!
During the 1970s, when I was twenty, was when I first decided to become a millionaire. I never made it.
My first attempt to do so involved buying a book written by the, then, richest man in the world. His name was John Paul Getty and he had made his money in the oil business.
Not A Getty Rig
Back when Getty made his first million dollars it was relatively expensive to set up as a wild-cat oil prospector. You needed to hire a drilling rig, men to run it, know how to tell a good geologist from a fake, but above all you needed balls!
Getty eschewed fancy offices, and often slept on the rig with his men. His office was the mudguard of a battered Model T Ford. His first claim nearly was stolen from him, but that is another story.
If you had insufficient capital and your claim turned out to be a dry hole, then you were out of the game. The Internet business is quite similar to those wildcat oil days, except it costs less to start-up and the risks are far less.
Getty’s oil rigs were located on dry land, at first in Texas and later in the Middle East, as his businesses grew. To find oil you must be in the right place, manage your staff efficiently maintaining their spirits, and above all persist until you make the strike. No doubt the similarities between the oil business and Internet marketing are becoming clearer?
You see there are rules to both success in prospecting for oil and also looking for traffic, ignore them and the game’s over!
As you can see I learned a lot about Getty from that book, but never took action and became an oilman.
Fishing for traffic
Let’s think about getting traffic as fishing, When you’re fishing you must fish where there’s fish if you want to catch any. Of course if your aim is to sit in the sun, shooting the breeze with your fellows, have a beer or two before eating steak back home that’s OK, but it’s not fishing

If you’re not one of Alex’s students and you’re reading this then you might like to read my review of ‘The Guru’s Dream‘ and get aquainted with Alex, it will be worth your time.
I’ve noticed recently that many of Alex’s students are getting Alex’s fishing tips completely wrong. I am not going to name names, or point out the fault here, save to say that if you spend your time going round your fellow student’s websites posting comments then the only traffic you’re likely to acquire will be visits from your fellow students. That’s a pretty small pool innit?
It’s Monday morning ~ time to follow the leader properly. Download ‘The Guru’s Dream’ and read what Alex writes about fishing from oil rigs. Then rather than do what I’ve done for the past forty years, since deciding to become a millionaire, which is simply to read a book and understand it ~ instead you must take action.

The cheapest traffic available comes free from search engines, and it’s conservatively estimated that over 60% of searches are made through Google. Google likes to ‘own’ the web because it says: “Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.”
You want to align yourself with the Google mission if you aim to have a high page rank on Google. Fortunately Google provides webmasters with heaps of resources to help you create successful websites, which will pull in a ton of traffic.
Does this mean that you should ignore other search engines, such as Yahoo, Ask, MSN, Altavista, Alltheweb, and those hundred or so others competing to deliver relevant traffic to surfers? No of course not, but if you follow the Google guidelines most likely you’ll improve your ratings in the other search engines too ~ certainly following Google guidelines does no harm
So what does Google have to say about how your website should be structured? How should you place the content and the links so that your site is accessible, and if you are providing quality information, is more accessible than other websites?
Simple, read the Google guidelines every week at least once and make sure that you structure your website as they advise.
So in order to create a quality standard for your website you really don’t need to do that much work because some very clever people at Google have already done the work for you. Nevertheless a simple checklist that highlights those Google requirements would be helpful to most webmasters so I’ve created one for you to download from here.
Google is cautious, if not off-putting, with respect to employing Search Engine Oprimization (SEO) specialists because some use ‘black hat’ methods to attempt to fool the Google algorithms and undermine the standards for quality and information sharing it upholds. Moreover, many SEO specialists charge for their time, rather than Google Real Time Traffic, that is the traffic gained as measured by Google Analytics.
