Alex Jeffreys Student Blogs Revisited: Is Your Problem That You’re Unlike Alex?

By Stephen On March 31, 2009 Under Alex Jeffreys Coaching, Rich Schefren

Yesterday I spent some time visiting the bogs of those who have commented here in the past. With a few exceptions most of these are still alive, although some haven’t been updated recently.

Many of those who comment here are people who took part in Alex Jeffreys’ first Coaching Program, which ended in January.

Of those students a few are highly successful, but many are not.

Before you think this is going to be another one of those blogs exhorting people to take action, or suggesting that failure on-line is somehow your fault be reassured it isn’t.

You see I think I may have discovered the reason why some are succeeding whilst most continue to fail even after Alex’s coaching.

The reason emerged as I looked at the various blog styles, the posts made, and the comments offered.

You see Alex is a highly charismatic character. He likes to live life in the fast lane. He works hard, plays hard, and puts himself forward.

Do you remember how he sent out that video letting us know that he had been nominated for a Shorty Business Award on Twitter? Pure showmanship!

The fact is though that not all of us are showmen, or show women. But that doesn’t mean we’re failures.

Lets look at this in more detail.

Rich Schefren and Jay Abraham in the Maven Matrix Manifesto clearly outline the benefits of showmanship. So do Dr. Joe Vitalie, Jonathan Gunson, Maria Andros and may others.

Quite simply when you’re perceived to be the expert in your field you don’t need to search for joint ventures, products to promote, adwords, pay per click, off-line advertising, or any of the things that are the bread and butter of most Internet promotion. The reason is that people will beat a path to your door. Indeed you will have to turn most J.V. offers away.

But being on show comes at a price. Not everyone wants to live in the limelight, to be under public scrutiny, to have to endure comments made about the veracity of their claims. Indeed not everyone wants to be a star.

If you don’t want to be a star that’s OK and you can still be successful on-line. But you need a different kind of training!

You see you can never become a star even if you model what the successful Internet marketing stars do unless you know deep down, at your core, which is a feeling just under your diaphragm below your stomach, that you’re really a star who has always been waiting to happen.

If you don’t have that conviction, them really you need to follow a different path to success.

Here are some other tests to determine if you’re a star, or what I like to term a ‘back-room executive’.

Would you prefer to drive a Ferrari, or a family saloon? Do you want to change your life, or lead the same life in better surroundings without financial worries?  Is your wristwatch about showing you status, or telling the time? Are you looking for life in the fast lane, or a better education for your kids?

If you want the Ferrari, the new lifestyle, the Audmars Piguet wristwatch, the tux in the casino, then most likely you’re a star in the making. You know what you need to do ~ get your teeth fixed and then make videos; create a professional polished web site; develop your own products to giveaway; give interviews; endorse other peoples’ products; write books; give away free reports; cosset other stars; and hire Glenn Dietzel :~)

But if you’re interested in your family, your wristwatch is used to tell the time, you like your life but would enjoy a larger house without financial worries, and you would like your kids to get a good education without having to leave home then probably you’re a back room executive.

These aren’t trivial distinctions. Take the wrong training and you will fail.

Can you imagine a star spending their days supervising the development of a host of niche web sites? Do stars look forward to spending even half an hour doing keyword research to find hot niches that will make them money on auto-pilot if they do it right?

Of course not. They’re researching diamonds, and Porches, purchasing yachts, and writing stories about teachers who thought them failures because they didn’t apply themselves to lessons or care about the environment.

But the back room executive loves the chase, and meat of marketing on-line. Tracking down a bevy of long-tail keywords, setting up a set of valves and funnels to make money on auto-pilot excites them beyond measure. Indeed they even get satisfaction from knowing that they might buy the entire street yet their neighbours think of them as modest people possessed of community values.

If deep down you’re a back room executive you need to know the intricacies, tips, tricks, turns, white hat, grey hat, black hat, secrets of the Internet that enable reclusive people to make thousands on-line.

Personally I don’t believe that grey, or black hat techniques are necesary for on-line success, but as an Internet marketing professional you should know every twist and turn of earning money on-line.

There are a few places where this information is available but this week a new product called ‘The Affiliate Funnel System’ from Saj P hits the marketplace. Click on the video below to view the first module.

Stephen, as ever a very insightful post. I completely agree with you that “putting yourself out there” is critical to success particularly in a crowded marketplace. The internet really does make the World a smaller place but that means we have to “shout” even louder to get noticed.

Stephen

Mike, I’m not really saying that you must ’shout’ loud to get noticed. Or if I am I’m thinking that ’stars’ and ‘backroom affiliates’ shout in very different ways.

The star needs a staff to support their image. They may even eventually need an agent, or a manager?

The back room executive is more of a techie. S/he knows the ropes and outsources tasks to make their business work efficiently, whislt making the product the star of the show.

Hey Stephen,

I’ve thouroughly enjoyed your post and it did indeed make a light bulb go off in my head.

I am sooo the star case for the reason that I do feel in my gut and that is what I’ve been setting the scene since my GPS training. However, I must say that I must be the exception to the rules for identifying the 2 groups, for I coud not give a dam about status, car, jews, etc and most of the things you described on the back room execs (family, watch to check the time, etc) describe me very perfectly.

On the other hand I have been struggling a lot to confess to myself that I cannot go any longer in this game if I don’t start outsorcing very quickly. I am techy phobic and even though I enjoy experimenting, as soon as something tech. goes wrong I immediately back off whatever that project is and I put on the back burner, which pushes my procratination button at fast pace.

All I wanted to say was really a big thank you for validating how I felt for the past few days really.

The universe has been speaking to me in strange ways latelly and you were just the latest avenue for a strong message.

God bless you for that.

Lot’s of love,

Sandra

Stephen, interesting post. Makes complete sense.

It is so important to plan out a course of action, or fail floundering from one grand money maker to another.

It also seems to me that the only way to really draw the consistent income is to be owner of a product, and have a salesforce (affiliates) moving that product.

Hi Stephen,

Knowing who you are and what your strengths are become a KEY part of your success - whether offline or online! Like you said, some of us are stars, others are back room executives, and others may still b e trying to figure out who they are and where they fit.

Great points.

Hi Stephen

A very interesting post which describes probably most of those trying to make money on the internet. However there are others who have no choice but to do all the backroom tasks themselves until they start to get an income, this may mean that they are not as fast at moving forward as they want to be, but they do not quit when the going gets tough.

I think the main reason for them having to do the mundane tasks themselves is lack of funds to enable outsourcing as needed and thus not enough time to cover everything faster, although they may want to be in the fast lane.

HI Stephen, This article spoke volumes to me, I know that I am not a ’star’ because I really do not like all the razzmatazz that you seem to have to indulge in to become a’star’. I am working towards being successful without having to employ all these self promotion tactics. I am not saying for one moment that these ways do not work, as it is patently obvious that they do for a lot of people, but if I tried that approach I know that it wouldn’t sit well with me and wouldn’t come across as ‘’sincere”. I not naive enough to think that I don’t need to prove that I know what I am talking about, but my approach will be more subtle.
I have felt for a long time that my future would lie in non-IM niches because, in a lot of cases it seems to be a pre-requisite that you have to employ these methods to get anywhere within this niche.
All the best, Paull
PS. Thanks for your comment on my blog.
PPS. Hope the weather is better in Turkey than it is here in Mallorca at the moment.

Richard,

I know what you mean about seeming to have no choice about whether to do the backroom tasks yourself, I’ve been there, and actually I enjoy the techie backroom stuff. If I hired a good designer my designs would be better, if I hired a great copywriter my copy would sell better. The fact is though I love to dabble.

But consider this. Andrew Fox admits to being no techie and look where he is. The fact is that having no technical skills can be an asset because you’re forced to outsource to people who are more skilled than you’re ever likely to be.

And it can’t really be that more expensive, after all, Foxy was pumping gas when he first went on-line.

Paul,

I know where you’re at. I spend more time setting up niche blogs than hanging out here. It suits me quite well, in fact I wouldn’t have built this blog at all if it weren’t for Alex.

On the other hand the videos are a great distraction. I enjoy making them and need to become more professional. Maybe I’m a star in the making even though a Farrari here would bottom bery easily and most likely lose its sump!

I hope Foxy turns up one day with his yacht though, I’ve a jetty just three hundred yards away that he can tie up to.

Weather here is good. We’re eating breakfast in the garden. Bees are a buzzin’ All’s well in the world.

Nice to hear from you both.

Hi Stephen,

I gotta say this was a brilliant post. You do have some great thoughts.

I hadn’t seen you around for a while so I thought I’d come looking to see what you are up (or down) to.

I think a little “showmanship” at times is OK. For instance, when I was in Las Vegas in May/June I recorded many short “Internet Marketing Tip” videos and I have just started putting them up on my blog - slack, I know. Anyway, some of them are educational, some are funny, some are just me going off on a tangent about some goofy thing. I know they won’t appeal to everyone.

Better run now - working on some interesting projects ATM. Stay in touch Braysie. You know you are one of my fave sparring (bantering) partners. LOL!
