Alex Jeffreys, Glenn Dietzel, Last Night’s Call

By Stephen On February 4, 2009 Under Alex Jeffreys Coaching

Alex Jeffreys and Glenn Dietzel have taken many of us by surprise. Judging be the ‘lack’ of responses that I received to my inquiries about what others thought either at F500 or via Twitter my guess is that many were too busy, or exhausted, to tune into the call.

Glenn and Alex are an unlikely duo comprised of an ex Deputy Headteacher, and the kid who might have spent his school career waiting outside the Head’s door!

Yet both are incredibly successful at business generation.

I have no idea how Alex pulled off his amazing J.V. with Glenn. There are rumours that it might even have been brokered by Rich Schefren, others claim the connection goes all the way up to Jay Abraham?

Whatever the truth of these rumours the call had the hallmark of Schefren’s Rolling Launch Formula. Essentially this involves approaching J.V. partners and then creating launches dedicated to each J.V. partner’s list.

So my question is has Alex now decided to extend his program by partnering with Glenn, or is this really Glenn’s program for which Alex is an affiliate?

The call itself was fascinating, but quite unlike anything we’ve heard from Alex.

Information or Recommendation?

Glenn Dietzel claims that we’re no longer living in the ‘Information Age’. Instead we’re in the ‘Recommendation Age’. He went on to provide two laws of marketing in the ‘Recommendation Age’.

Milgram’s Law is named after a famous psychological experiment conducted at Harvard over half a century ago. Students were asked to administer electrical shocks to fellow experimenters in a controlled environment. Many did so because they accepted the authority of the college professors, especially when they were wearing white coats.

In today’s milieu this means that if you’re perceived to be wearing the white coat you can persuade 80% of people to follow you to hell and back.

The Origin of Zipf’s Law is also Harvard. It is a law of probability that can be applied to many social phenomena and indicates, for example, just how likely a word is likely to be used, where different populations may be found around cities, as well as having ramifications for the distribution of wealth.

Joel Comm has created a flowchart about ‘The Idea Virus’ and Zipf’s Law. Joe learned about Zipf’s Law from Glenn Dietzel.

Dietzel says that in terms of Milgram’s Law the market must perceive you as an expert, and in respect to Zipf’s Law you must choose company perceived to be at the top.

Joel Comm rewrites the original laws thus:

Milgram’s Law: People will blindly believe the words of an expert.

Zipf’s Law: People will choose the industry leader every time

The recommendation age is all about perception!

Before you can apply either of these laws to yourself Dietzel asserts that you must market to yourself first, by identifying the story you tell yourself that causes the pain that makes you fail, and then be assisted to create a new story.

Writing is seen as the key to remedying difficulties and recoding and reintegrating your thoughts. I agree with this apprach, and discussed it here.

It happens that I understand fully where he’s coming from. The concepts of relanguaging, and relearning he referred to have been the common parlance of ‘Family Therapists’ for the past forty, or so years and I teach them via ‘The Family Business School‘.

He also talks about creating an exit strategy for your business. Do you wish to, for example, Sell your business; float your business on the stock exchange; or pass it to the next generation? These are serious questions, which I address in some detail here.

In order to grow a business using Dietzel’s model you must always think strategically. The process involves finding a way to solve a problem; turning your idea into a recommendation; and building a system to deliver your most high end product.

Rather than concentrating on producing lots of free stuff as someone, who perceives themselves and is perceived, at the top of the game you should make creating a high-end product your priority.

You then market that product by a the most effective means you can devise.

How To Differentiate Yourself From Competition

This marketing includes differentiating yourself from competition by explaining what problems your product solves, which your competitors fail to address. The aim of this is to put you in a unique category within your market niche.

One way of qualifying yourself thus is to provide your prospects with a list of questions that they should ask their competitors whilst they are making their due diligence.

Some of the call was devoted to discussing Glenn Dietzel’s software. This went a little over my head, and frankly unless you install the software and see it in action I figure it will go over most everyone else’s too. Maybe that was a ploy to get us to install it?

There is much to be commended about Glenn Dietzel’s ideas. He demonstrated some of his precepts by providing social proof of his methods by citing the Jay Abraham Organization, and Joel Comm as clients, but then going on to bring two current clients to the microphone. These women were less prominent personalities and it was possible to more readily relate to them.

One question remained in my mind.  Was Dietzel able to convince listeners that his brand of coaching really dovetail’s with Alex Jeffreys’ coaching from the benches style and can produce for them the kinds of changes they desire in their lives? If Alex is the coach, for some Glenn must have come over more like the Chairman of the Club!

The Milgram Experiment Today?
Students commonly assume that, even if Milgram’s famous experiment sheds important light on the power of situation today, were his experiment precisely reproduced today, it would not generate comparable results.

Review of Author & Grow Rich by Glenn Dietzel
I pounced on this book full of eager anticipation. Its sub-title - ‘How To Write A Money-Making Book In Only 12 Hours!’ - incorporated two of my favourite things, writing and the promise of riches.

Than you VERY much for this excellent report and review of yesterday´s call.
Ever so often I suffer from connection problems (living in Andalusia this seems to be “nomal” when we have wet wather…) and that is why my sound level was so low I could not understand anything when Glenn talked, Alex came through much stronger, though.
I have recorded the session, but even there Glenn is hard to understand, so I am really glad to have found the gist of it all here.
Being as I am, I am not really convinced yet, I must admit. Which means that I shall continue on the path laid out for us in Alex´s coaching program and I am aware that I might be missing something here….
Good success to you and many thanks for your valuable post.
Cheers,
Juergen

Hi Stephen,

Nice synopsis of the call. Must admit there are a LOT of laws and things there. So, the Gazz-Man has decided that HE needs to have a law. So, here goes…

Gazz-Man’s Law: “A man’s gotta be what a man’s gotta be.”

Now that is gender interchangeable too. So, if you are a chicky-babe just use woman for man. I hope you don’t think this is superficial. There is a lot of depth in this. Think about what we are all doing here!

Gazz-Man’s Law: “A man’s gotta be what a man’s gotta be.”

Well I think a chap’s gotta be what enhances his body, mind and soul, and the skill-sets used by others don’t necessarily do so.

On the other hand at times it’s O.K. to model others to learn how do things, before simplifying what they do so that the medium isn’t confused with the message.

I am not convinced that Glenn’s and Joel Comm’s definition of Milgram’s Law and Zipf’s Law are entirely what Milgram and Zipf had in mind, but there is some truth there.

What I haven’t shared in these pages is that for several years I ran a highly successful off-line consultancy in which I was engaged by major banks, pharmaceutical companies, as well as government agencies, and charities.

I don’t really want to work so hard again. I enjoy living on this beach too much for that :-)

So I am not going to follow Alex and Glenn down this new road, but I wish them well and I think many will benefit by doing so.

The Gazz Man Brand is very good ~ was it Aleister Crowley who wrote “Do what thou Wilt?”

Stephen,
Thank you for compiling your notes into something understandable, as well as the additional information you included.

Like Juergen, my phone connection was so poor I could not understand some of the words Glenn spoke.

What I did take from it is “Writing is the doing part of thinking.” and “Come ready to take massive, focused outcome driven action.”

That last quote was from the email. Focused outcome driven action is something Alex (and probably every other guru) stresses.

I was reading The Uncertainty Syndrome by Jay Abraham in which he talks about constraints. I am going to go back over my notes from Module 1 with Alex. In fact, I’ll re-read all of my notes.

Alex has given us the gems of what has made him successful and all we have to do is follow the steps.

All the best,
Theresa

I missed the call, so I don’t have a lot to comment on it specifically, but I have had lunch with Glenn and chatted quite a bit about authoring.

Authoring for authority status is an attractive proposition for sure, but I am not particularly thrilled with this latest possible tangent.

Reading between the lines, it smells strongly of a “triple threat” affiliate promotion. Which rubs me a bit wrong at this stage in the game. After reading your opions on it, I’ll have to check this out further soon.

Theresa, ‘writing in longhand is the doing part of thinking’ because it helps to balance the four systems of the mind, but only if done in the right way. This is why I made this post a few weeks back. I really do think Stuart Lichtman has one of the best systems for using writing to sort out your plans and ensure they are right for you according to Gazz Manz Law :-)

Ross the triple threat affiliate question is loaded for sure. I raised it, somewhat, when I wrote “So my question is has Alex now decided to extend his program by partnering with Glenn, or is this really Glenn’s program to which Alex is an affiliate?”

Even if Alex is acting as Glenn’s affiliate though it doesn’t really detract from the energy, and quality, of all he’s imparted to date.

Thanks for the post . I really appreciate your notes and explanation of what took place. I did listen in but could hardly hear anything that was said. At first I tried the webinar but it just went dead so I tried the ‘phone line but that was also pretty hit and miss. I thought it was the weather but in view of the other comments on this page that might not be the case.

I did hear that Writing is the doing part of thinking and if f I could just write and not have to bother about all the other “stuff” we’re being taught on this course I’d be happy.

Love your blog by the way.

Best wishes

Jean

Hi Stephen,

Thanks for creating the detailed overview of the call last night.

I wanted to know what the 7 to 10 questions were that people usually asked and also the silent Q&A that goes on.

These quesions weren’t answered.

I must say I found the whole call to be as Alex quoted ’strategic release of information’. Then the ‘investment to further your education’ bit for half price coaching at almost $5,000 was overkill for me. I won’t be following it up myself.

Just concentrating on the bird in my hand (F500 coaching) rather than the 2 birds (Glenn’s coaching) in the bush.

I too thought the partnership was somewhat strange.

Cheers,

Dave

Hi Stephen,

I’ve linked to you from my latest post, as I missed part of the call, so thanks for reproducing the information here.

It looks like a sophisticated program to get you thinking outside the box. It can be a good idea to pay for a fast track system, effectively exchanging $ for time. We are doing that with Alex and Alex has done that with his mentors.

But it’s not for everybody, and not for me at this stage. Maybe if I was raking in the coin then I might consider it but I can’t justify it at this time.

If Alex makes a fat commission from this, good luck to him I say. We would be doing the same given half a chance I’m sure.

All the best
Ken

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all your comments:

Jean: There’s more to writing as a means to resolve difficulties that was revealed in the call. Were it simply a matter of writing out goals, or something like that it would be just sooooo easy.

The trick is in the re-writes, and the use of scaling questions :-)

As there seems to be some interest in this approach here I may well write more on it here soon!

Dave, you write: “I wanted to know what the 7 to 10 questions were that people usually asked and also the silent Q&A that goes on.”

Good point. I’ve submitted a support ticket to Alex so we can discover this. More when he replies :-)

As for the $5000 ticket, you may even be able to secure Rich Schefren’s mentor Jay Abraham’s coaching services for around that today:

http://www.abraham.com/businessrescue

By the way I’m not affiliated with the Abraham Organization and get nothing out of posting that link here.

Ken, “It can be a good idea to pay for a fast track system, effectively exchanging $ for time.”

This is true, BUT only if you know what you REALLY, REALLY, want. The danger of doing things too quickly is that you get swept up, your life changes, maybe your richer, but you’ve lost privacy, family-time, or are spending your life on one speaking engagement after another.

I admire your caution.

More soon guys,

Stephen

P.S. Glenn has now released a recording of the call for those who were registered for it, but I can’t post a link here because he’s made it clear that’s against the rules.

I guess I’ll weigh in here, since I have worked with Glenn a couple of years ago.

I think Glenn does know his stuff. His program utilizes his writing program to help you write a book quickly and get it published as a way to give yourself credability and help with positioning. This book contains your story and solution, that relates to your market.

His program is high end and it’s designed for you to get into the high end arena as well. For myself, I was not ready for this kind of step. He helped me with a project I was doing which I think was a little off from his usual tract. It was not successful for me. I learned later from other highly successful marketers that I should have done the project differently.

Anyway, water under the bridge and I did learn from him.

As to Alex’s onvovlvement. Perhaps Alex is bringing in Glenns program as the high end option for his offereing. I’m sure most of you know that a lot of the ‘big’ marketers are using high end coaching as a way to elevate their earnings above the $1500 to $3000 packages. These high end coaching programs are operated by outside training companies and are usually in the range of $10,000 to $50,000.

I’ve received many solicitations for these after purchasing products form some of the gurus. This is how someone like Tellman or Bacak can get the high paydays without having to develop and operate the program.

So, from what I know about Glenn, the $5000 offering is just the ’starter’ option. If you are ready for the big exposure thing, then consider it, but if you are in a place where you are trying to make your first bucks on line and have not solidified your business purpose, your specific niche and at least have some groundwork set up for what you want to get big at - wait! You won’t have the time or resources to pull it off.

One man’s thoughts

PS, I would keep you eyes on Glenn and what he does, he definately has figured out how to rise up, sell himself and high end programs. Learn from everybody!

John
